2026 FOIL Release: A Complete, Public List of New York State Judges
Scrutinize has obtained records identifying every judge currently presiding in New York State courts. We secured these records through a Freedom of Information Law (FOIL) request. This release provides a comprehensive public directory of New York judges, including their current terms, official titles, and court assignments.
Scrutinize is providing both the original (“raw”) data and a cleaned, standardized version. In our standardized dataset, we:
- Matched and normalized judge names for consistency.
- Categorized judicial titles and court assignments clearly and systematically.
- Corrected inaccuracies in term dates and clarified appointment details.
- Standardized judges' names.
Some minor inaccuracies inevitably remain, reflecting typical administrative data challenges, but our cleaned dataset offers a significantly improved and more reliable resource.
This dataset is also integrated into Scrutinize’s Judicial Profiles. There, the data is enriched by our own analysis, enabling deeper insights and easier access to information about judges’ backgrounds, decision patterns, and professional histories. New Yorkers now have the tools to meaningfully assess and scrutinize their judiciary.
